カトリック教会では「アヴェ・マリア」を繰り返し唱えながら、聖書に記されているキリストの出来事を黙想して祈る「ロザリオの祈り」という信心業があります。

ロザリオは、この「ロザリオの祈り」を唱える際に、回数を間違わずに正確に祈るために用いる、数珠状の信心用具のことです。

ミサなどの典礼行為とは異なり、私的な信心業であり、祈り方（数え方）が定められています。そのため、基本的には、ロザリオの珠の数や形状はみな同じです。

※本来ロザリオは、首に掛けるものではございません。そのため、ネックレスのように輪を外すことはできません。

最初の1つめの珠で「主の祈り」を唱え、続く10個の珠で「アヴェ・マリアの祈り」を10回唱えて、結びに「栄唱」を唱えて1連となります。
通常はこの1連を5回繰り返すのが正式なロザリオの祈りです。

祈りの言葉は、カトリック教会によって定められています。
ロザリオの祈りでは「十字架のしるし」から始まり「使徒信条」・「主の祈り」・「アヴェ・マリアの祈り」・「栄唱」を唱えます。

ヘブライ語で「まことに」や「そのように」という意味を表します。キリスト教においては、「確かに、そうなりますように」という意味を込めて、祈りの最後に唱えます。

父と子と聖霊のみ名によって。アーメン

In the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

天地の創造主、全能の父である神を信じます。父のひとり子、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストを信じます。主は聖霊によってやどり、乙女マリアから生まれ、ピラトのもとで苦しみを受け、十字架につけられて死に、葬られ、よみに下り、三日目に死者のうちから復活し、天に昇って、全能の父である神の右の座に着き、生者と死者を裁くために来られます。聖霊を信じ、聖なる普遍の教会、聖徒の交わり、罪のゆるし、からだの復活、永遠の命を信じます。アーメン。

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God , born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, beggotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father, through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation be came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spilit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, be suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and in seated at the right band of the father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is abored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

天におられる私たちの父よ、み名が聖とされますように。み国が来ますように。みこころが天に行なわれる通り、地にも行なわれますように。日ごとの糧を、今日もお与えください。私たちの罪をお許しください。私たちも人を許します。私たちを誘惑におちいらせず、悪からお救いください。アーメン。

Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasse as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

アヴェ・マリア、恵みに満ちたかた、主はあなたとともにおられます。あなたは女のうちで祝福され、ご胎内の御子イエスも祝福されています。神の母・聖マリア、私たち罪びとのために、今も、死を迎える時も、お祈りください。アーメン。

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and ato the hour of our death. Amen.

栄光は、父と子と聖霊に、初めのように、今も、いつも、世々に。アーメン。

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spilit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

本来「ロザリオの祈り」はただ唱えるのではなく、イエスまたは聖母マリアの生涯の主な出来事を黙想しながら唱えます。

黙想する出来事は、神秘（Mysteries）といわれ、喜びの神秘・苦しみの神秘・栄えの神秘・光の神秘と4つあります。
※光の神秘は、2002年に新しく加えられました。

それぞれの神秘は、第1～第5まで5つの神秘に分かれており、ロザリオの輪を繰りながら5連＝1環として祈ります。

教会では、1週間でイエスとマリアの生涯をすべて黙想するために、曜日を決めて黙想するように推奨しています。

「喜びの神秘」は、イエスの誕生から幼児期を５つに分けて黙想します。

第1の神秘　受胎告知　The annunciation
大天使ガブリエルは、マリアに彼女が神の子の母になることを告げます。
The Angel Gabriel tells Mary that she is to be the Mother of God.

第2の神秘　エリザベト訪問　The Visitation
マリアが彼女のいとこであるエリザベトのもとを訪れる。
The Blessed Virgin pays a visit to her cousin Elizabeth.

第3の神秘　キリストの降誕　The Nativity
イエス・キリストがベツレヘムの馬小屋で産まれる。
The Infant Jesus is born in a stable at Bethlehem.

第4の神秘　主の奉献　The Presentation
マリアが、幼いイエスを神殿のシメオンのもとに連れていく。
The Blessed Virgin presents the Child Jesus to Simeon in the Temple.

第5の神秘　キリストの発見　The Finding in the Temple
イエスが3日間いなくなった後、マリアは神殿で彼を発見する。
Jesus is lost for three days, and the Blessed Mother finds Him in the Temple.

「苦しみの神秘」は、イエスの受難から磔になり亡くなるまでを５つに分けて黙想します。

第1の神秘　ゲッセマネの苦しみ　The Agonu in the Garden
イエスが、オリーブ山のふもとのゲッセマネの園で祈る。
Jesus prays in the Garden of Olives.

第2の神秘　鞭打ち　The Scourging at the Pillar
ピラトがイエスをとらえて、鞭でうつ。
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged.

第3の神秘　茨の冠　The Crowning with Thorns
茨の冠がイエスの頭のうえに載せられる。
A crown of thorns is placed upon the head of Jesus

第4の神秘　十字架の道　The Carrying of the Cross
イエスは、十字架を磔の地まで自ら運ばされる。
Jesus is made to caeey his cross to Calvary.

第5の神秘　十字架上の死　The Crucifixion
イエスは十字架に釘で磔にされ、我々の罪を背負い息をひきとる。
Jesus is nailed to the cross, and dies for our sins.

「栄えの神秘」は、イエスの復活から、イエスと聖母マリアの栄光までを５つに分けて黙想します。

第1の神秘　キリストの復活　The Resurrection
イエスは死から3日後蘇り、復活する。
Jesus rises from the dead, three days after His death.

第2の神秘　昇天　The Ascension
イエスは死から40日後、天の国へと昇る。
Forty days after His death, Jesus ascends into Heaven.

第3の神秘　茨の冠　The Crowning with Thorns
茨の冠がイエスの頭のうえに載せられる。
